Like all conservation organizations, Minnesota Waterfowl Association is working to meet the challenges brought about by declining numbers of hunters, an aging membership population and the need to attract young volunteers to the cause of conservation. The number of hunters peaked in the United States in 1985 at 16.8 million. By 2001, it had dropped 23% to about 12.4 million. If current trends hold, by 2025 there will be just 9.9 million hunters to support conservation and our hunting heritage.
While we know more mature members are more politically active and have more time and money to contribute to conservation than younger members the fact is, we need to recruit young people in order to secure our future. To meet this goal, Minnesota Waterfowl Association launched the PASS IT ON initiative. This new initiative is a part of a national movement to get kids outdoors and, to get people thinking and planning for the future by passing the love for hunting and wildlife on to the next generation.
Do the right thing. Leave a lasting legacy, PASS IT ON.
The first four weekends of the season brought long, warm days and lots of wood ducks and a few blue wing teal and mallards. By mid October the days were changing and ringnecks, redheads and canvasbacks were showing up in good numbers. Camp was full the first week of November and the peak of the fall migration was near. Big flocks of cans, redheads and bluebills came in on the twenty ninth of October and on November second large flocks of mallards were coming on the lake but they did not stay for long. By the next day most were already gone. On November seventh trappers and hunters on the lake reported seeing huge flocks of mallards. The next day ducks were everywhere and it was one of those days when the limit comes too quickly. November thirteenth the north end of the lake was full of ringnecks but not much else. A week later, after nearly sixty cold, windy, grueling days, 3/4" of ice and an inch of snow shut down camp for another year.
NEW WETLAND BASIN. Your contributions have helped add another wetland basin to West Pierce Lake. This will enhance waterfowl habitat on a very productive wetland complex. Waterfowl on Pierce Lake continue to have very good nesting success.
Make a lasting impact on future generations and help them get the same enjoyment from wetlands and our hunting heritage as we have. Pass on your love and passion for the outdoors. Because of generous supporters like you, the Minnesota Waterfowl Association, Inc. has been a strong voice for a cause that you believe in through programs that are dedicated to the conservation of waterfowl and other wildlife. Now you can play an integral role by including a charitable gift within your overall estate and financial plans. With a little planning, you can help us maintain and expand our habitat improvements, public awareness, education and land management policies and programs for many years to come.
You can help us to fight to protect wildlife habitat and protect our hunting heritage right here in Minnesota by remembering the Minnesota Waterfowl Association in your will. After making sure your family and loved ones are taken care of, consider a gift to the Minnesota Waterfowl Association.
A great way to rally to the conservation cause right now and help secure your legacy is through a donation to the PASS IT ON initiative. Maybe something as simple as a gift through your Individual Retirement Account (IRA), or through your will or trust. Perhaps you or someone you know would be interested in participating in this vital initiative. For more information about how you can leave a conservation legacy or to discuss making a gift to the Minnesota Waterfowl Association contact the Chain of Lakes Chapter of Minnesota Waterfowl Association at 507-235-3692 or Minnesota Waterfowl Association Executive Director, Brad Nylin, at 952-767-0320.
Your support is critical and appreciated. Like many of you, our budget is tight. In an extended recession, the needs we address as a charitable organization become more urgent. If you have the resources, now is the time to step forward to help us with our conservation mission and leave a lasting legacy for future generations. Let's continue to work together and make the Minnesota Waterfowl Association work even better. We can find solutions to our common problems. We welcome your input. Our conservation and hunting heritage is worth fighting for. We stand ready to do our part.
