The season of thanks

By MWA, 11/22/17, 7:30AM CST

Yes, we know we’re a day early, but we here at the Minnesota Waterfowl Association would like to wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving! As many of you know, 2017 marks our 50th year as an organization, and there’s certainly a lot to be thankful for. Thank you to all of our chapters, members and supporters. Thanks to you, we accomplish great work and continue working to fulfill what we see as our obligation to continue the conservation and waterfowling tradition.

We’d also like to remind hunters that the duck season has now closed in the state’s North Duck Zone. (Closing date was Nov. 21.) By many accounts, it was a pretty successful season for many hunters. While there were some early freeze-ups, it sounds like hunters had good opportunities throughout the season. We’ve been monitoring social media, too, and seeing the fruits of what look like great late-season hunts. Hunting in the Central Duck Zone continues through Nov. 26, while it runs through Dec. 3 in the South Duck Zone. Good luck to everyone who still plans to head afield!

We’ll continue to monitor the sales of state duck stamps, but there’s little evidence to suggest that we had a bunch more hunters participating this year. A declining trend isn’t one we like to see, so we all need to do what we can to introduce new people to the sport or bring back people who’ve hung up their waders for one reason or another.

Finally, we’d also like to mention that entrance to Minnesota’s state parks is free on Friday. That alone is a good excuse to skip the mall and instead spend the day outside.
